May 17th, 2021 Marks the end of Full COVID-19 Travel Restrictions and the Beginning of Growth for Travel Insurance Sales

As the UK government announced plans to begin to reopen international travel on 17th May with the removal of the international travel ban and the introduction of the traffic light system, we are already starting to see positive signs of growth for travel insurance sales. We expect this to continue rising as travel restrictions ease over the forthcoming weeks and months.

However, due to the Government guidance regarding proposed traffic light systems and other travel advice there could be quite a lot of confusion amongst customers.

The golden rule is that any Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice, such as advice against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’, will take precedence over the traffic light system.

Where customers are travelling against the advice of the FCDO, our High Risk Voyager policy will often be more suitable for a customer. The most recent FCDO travel advice can be viewed here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

The Traffic Light System:

The introduction of the Government traffic light system will have implications for inbound passengers and will apply differently depending on whether the destination country visited is categorised as ‘green’, ‘amber’ or ‘red’.

Green: arrivals will need to take a pre-departure test as well as a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test on or before day 2 of their arrival back into England – but will not need to quarantine on return (unless they receive a positive result) or take any additional tests, halving the cost of tests on their return from holiday.

Amber: arrivals will need to quarantine at home (i.e. ‘Self Isolate’) for a period of 10 days and take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on day 2 and day 8 with the option for Test to Release on day 5 to end self-isolation early.

Red: arrivals will be subject to restrictions currently in place for ‘red list’ countries which include a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, pre-departure testing and PCR testing on day 2 and 8.

To find out more about the UK Government plans to reopen international travel you should visit the Government website.

Where a country’s traffic light status changes prior to departure, for example from Green to Amber, cover will still be provided under the policy, unless there is a FCDO travel advisory against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’. However, in this instance it is the customer’s responsibility to adhere to the testing and quarantining requirements.
